Installing a dog door is more than simply cutting an opening and attaching the door. The size, location, construction of the door or wall, weather exposure, and proper sealing all play a role in getting a quality finished installation.

Huis Handyman can install dog doors in exterior doors and appropriate wall applications, whether you're installing a new dog door or replacing an existing one.

Choosing the Right Dog Door

When we're providing the dog door, we typically recommend full-aluminum dog doors with a multi-flap setup. These doors tend to hold up much better to Oklahoma's harsh weather conditions and provide better insulation than many of the less substantial options.

They do cost a little more, but we believe the added durability and insulation are well worth the investment—especially when the dog door leads directly to the outside.

Choosing the right size dog door is also important. A few things we consider are:

• Your dog's weight

• Your dog's height at the shoulders

• The location of the dog door

• Whether the door will be used by one dog or multiple dogs

If we provide the dog door, we'll give you the actual flap opening dimensions and the manufacturer's recommended dog size before moving forward. That gives you a chance to double-check that the opening will be a comfortable fit for your dog.

Where Will the Dog Door Be Installed?

The installation location makes a big difference in how we approach the project and how we quote it.

Dog Door Installation Through a Wall

If you're looking to install a dog door through an exterior wall, we'd like to know what type of material we'll be cutting through.

It's also helpful to know whether there are any electrical outlets, light switches, plumbing, or other potential obstructions near the proposed location.

We'll also need to know what's on both sides of the wall. What's on the interior side? What's on the exterior side? Is there siding, brick, stucco, a patio, a deck, or another surface that could affect the dog door installation?

Dog Door Installation in an Exterior Door

If the dog door will be installed in an exterior door, let us know what the door is made of. Common materials include:

• Wood

• Fiberglass

• Metal

It's also helpful to know whether the door has any existing design features, such as a 6-panel or 2-panel design, decorative sections, or a glass window. These details can affect where the dog door can be installed and which installation approach will work best.

Replacing an Existing Dog Door

If your existing dog door is damaged, worn out, drafty, or simply too small for your dog, we can help with replacement as well.

We'll remove the existing dog door and install the new one when the new door is compatible with the existing opening and installation location. Proper sealing and secure installation are especially important when replacing a dog door that leads directly outside.
